Overview

What the reading time calculator does and why it helps

Reading time is a promise to the reader. A blog post that says it takes six minutes tells a busy person whether to start. A book that says it is a quick weekend read sets an expectation, and an honest figure helps a reader choose. Authors use reading time in blurbs and newsletters, publishers use it to plan audiobooks and serials, and readers use it to plan a holiday or a reading challenge. A guess is often far off, and a figure with a clear basis is more useful.

The calculator works from what you know. Choose to start from a word count or from a page count, enter the number and, for pages, the words on each page, and the tool divides the total words by a slow, an average and a fast reading speed in words per minute, shown in hours and minutes. A language option switches to characters per minute for Chinese, and a field lets you type your own speed, which replaces the three standard ones. That is useful if you have timed yourself on a chapter and want a figure that fits your own reading.

Silent reading speeds vary with the reader, the text and the purpose. Published averages for adults in English are often given as around 200 to 300 words per minute, and many sources use about 238 as a typical figure for silent reading of nonfiction, with fiction a little faster. A technical book or a book in a second language takes longer, and a light novel can go faster. An audiobook is timed by its narrator and runs at a slower pace than silent reading, so do not use this figure for audio. Treat the result as an estimate with a range.

The reading time calculator estimates how long it takes to read a text, based on word count and reading speed. Authors can use this free reading time calculator as often as they like, and it never asks for payment. It runs as a reading time calculator online, so a laptop, tablet or phone is all you need. We built it as a reading time calculator for authors, with book-specific defaults. If you publish independently, treat it as a reading time calculator for self-published books of any length.

It works as a reading time calculator pages and a reading time calculator words tool, a reading time calculator word count tool and a reading time calculator book authors can use. It is a reading time calculator for books and, in plain terms, a time calculator for reading. You can paste text from a PDF into a reading time calculator PDF workflow or use it for a reading time calculator website. Some ask about a reading time calculator Chinese version, and since Chinese is counted by characters the speed assumption differs.

How to use it

How to use the reading time calculator, step by step

01

Choose word count or page count

Pick the figure you know. If you enter pages, the tool converts them to words using an average, and the result is a little less precise than a true word count.

02

Enter the figure

Type the number of words or pages in the book, article or manuscript. Use the final count if you have it, because late edits change the total.

03

Read the three speeds

The tool shows how long the text takes at a slow, an average and a fast reading speed. The range shows how much reading time varies between people.

04

Add your own speed

If you know your own words per minute, enter it, and the tool shows your personal reading time. It is useful for planning your own reading.

05

Use the Chinese option for characters

For Chinese text the tool works in characters per minute instead of words, since the language does not separate words with spaces.

06

Copy the result

Copy the time you need for a blurb, a blog post or a listing. Many sites show reading time, and a realistic figure builds trust.

How the reading time calculator works

Words, pages and three reading speeds

You choose to start from a word count or a page count, enter the number, and for pages you set the words on each page. The tool divides the total words by a slow, an average and a fast reading speed in words per minute, and shows each result in hours and minutes.

A language option switches to characters per minute for Chinese, and a field lets you type your own speed, which then replaces the three standard ones. This is useful if you have timed yourself on a chapter and want a figure that fits your own reading.

Silent reading speeds vary with the reader, the text and the purpose, and published averages for English adults are often around 200 to 300 words per minute, so treat the result as an estimate. A technical book or a book in a second language takes longer, and an audiobook is timed by its narrator, not by this speed.

Method

How the reading time calculator works out its answer

Words from pages

If you start from pages, the tool multiplies the pages by the words per page, which defaults to 275 words, a typical figure for a printed book page.

Three speeds

For English it divides the words by 200 for a slow reader, 238 for an average reader and 300 for a fast reader, and shows each result in hours and minutes.

Chinese

For Chinese text it counts characters, and divides by 200, 300 and 450 characters per minute for slow, average and fast reading.

Your own speed

If you enter a speed in words or characters per minute, the tool uses it in place of the three standard speeds.

Worked examples

Reading Time Calculator: worked examples

A 90,000-word novel

The tool shows about 6 hours at an average speed and a range from 4 to 8 hours. The author puts about six hours on the listing.

A 2,000-word article

About 8 minutes at an average speed. The author adds 8 minute read to the header. The same approach works for any manuscript, whatever its genre or length with your reading length check.

A 400-page book

Using an average of 300 words per page the tool estimates 120,000 words and about 8 hours. The figures are illustrations, and your own text or settings will give different numbers in the reading time calculator.

Use cases

Where authors use the reading time calculator

Adding a reading time to an article or a newsletter

Give readers a realistic estimate at the top, so that they can decide whether to read now or later. It improves the experience of long posts.

Estimating the length of an audiobook or a read-aloud

Reading speed is a guide to listening time. The tool gives a first estimate before you ask a narrator for a quote. It takes a minute with the reading time calculator and can save hours of rework at a later, more expensive stage.

Planning your own reading

See how long a manuscript takes to read, for a beta read, an edit or a review, and plan your time around it. You can share the result of the reading time calculator with an editor, designer or formatter who needs the same numbers.

Common mistakes

Mistakes the reading time calculator helps you avoid

Treating the average as exact

People read at very different speeds, and the same person reads fiction faster than a technical book. Use the range. The reading time calculator can only work with what you give it, so careful input is the best protection against this.

Using page count for an unusual layout

A large-print book or a picture book has few words per page. Use the word count for accuracy. Checking for this with the reading time calculator costs almost nothing, and correcting it later can mean rework.

Forgetting that reading aloud is slower

Speaking speed is lower than silent reading speed. Use a speaking time tool for talks. The reading time calculator will not catch this for you, so keep it in mind when you read the result.

Tips

Getting the most from the reading time calculator

01

Use the word count when you can

It is more reliable than pages. The reading time calculator is free and instant, so it is worth running again whenever your book changes.

02

Offer a range to readers

A range is more honest than a single number. Make the reading time calculator a routine step on every project, so that results stay consistent from book to book.

03

Test your own speed

Time yourself on a page to find your words per minute. A few minutes with the reading time calculator now saves time across the whole manuscript.

Limits

How far to trust the reading time calculator

Speeds vary widely

The tool cannot know your reader. Treat the reading time calculator as a quick, free check, and confirm anything important with the platform or printer you will use.

Page counts are approximate

Layout changes words per page. The reading time calculator gives guidance, not a guarantee, so use it alongside your own judgement and, where it matters, a specialist.

Not a measure of comprehension

Fast reading is not always understanding. It runs in your browser with the figures you enter, so its answers are only as accurate as those figures with your reading length check.

Need it done for you?

When the reading time calculator is not enough

The calculator tells you how long the book takes to read. These services shape how the book looks and feels on the page, in large print or in audio.
