Overview

What the isbn barcode generator does and why it helps

A barcode on the back of a printed book carries its ISBN in a form that a scanner can read in a bookshop, a library or a warehouse. Every ISBN-13 begins with 978 or 979, which means that it already has the structure of an EAN-13 barcode, the standard retail barcode used around the world. The barcode is therefore not a separate number to buy. It is the ISBN drawn as a pattern of bars that a machine can read quickly and without error.

This generator builds that pattern from your ISBN. Enter the number, with or without hyphens, and the tool converts an ISBN-10 to an ISBN-13 if needed, calculates and checks the final digit and draws the 13 digits as bars with the standard guard patterns at the start, the middle and the end. If you choose the price add-on, it adds the five-digit supplemental barcode that some retailers and distributors use to carry a price, and you can download the result as an SVG, which is a vector file that stays sharp at any size.

Barcodes have strict rules for size, quiet zones and colour. The tool draws the bars at the correct proportions, and when you place it on your cover you should keep a clear white margin around the bars, use dark bars on a light background and keep the barcode at a size that scanners read easily. Your cover designer or printer can tell you the exact size and position that they need, and many printers and platforms will place a barcode for you on request.

The ISBN barcode generator turns your ISBN into a scannable EAN-13 barcode, with an optional price add-on, that you can place on your back cover. Authors can use this free isbn barcode generator as often as they like, and it never asks for payment. You can use the isbn barcode generator online in any modern browser, with nothing to install. It works as an isbn barcode generator free online, on phones and desktops alike. We built it as an isbn barcode generator for authors, with book-specific defaults. Indie writers can rely on it as an isbn barcode generator for self-published books.

Many people want an ISBN barcode generator for books that they can drop straight into a cover file, and this works as a free ISBN barcode generator for books and a free online ISBN barcode generator for books in the same page. If you need an ISBN barcode generator vector output for a print cover, a vector file keeps the bars crisp at any size. You can add a price using the ISBN barcode generator with price option, which is how US trade books are usually sold. It is also an ISBN barcode generator for Amazon paperback covers, and in plain terms a barcode generator for ISBN numbers, so a barcode generator for ISBN free of charge is what you have here. Cover designers often ask for a free ISBN barcode generator with price, and the optional price add-on does exactly that.

How to use it

How to use the isbn barcode generator, step by step

01

Enter your ISBN

Type a ten- or thirteen-digit ISBN. The tool checks the digits as you type and tells you at once if the check digit is wrong, which catches most typing errors before they reach print.

02

Choose whether to add a price

You may add a five-digit add-on that carries a price code. Some markets and retailers expect it, and others ignore it, so check the rules of your platform.

03

Check the preview

The barcode appears with the digits beneath it. Compare the digits with the ISBN on your copyright page to confirm that they match.

04

Download the SVG

The file is vector, so it stays sharp at any size and prints cleanly. Save it with a clear name and keep a copy with your cover files.

05

Place it on the back cover

Position the barcode in the printer's specified area, on a white background, with a clear margin around it. Do not scale it down below the recommended size.

06

Test it

Print a proof and scan the barcode with a phone or a scanner to confirm that it reads. A barcode that does not scan is a problem at every point of sale.

How the isbn barcode generator works

Your ISBN, encoded the way retailers expect

You enter an ISBN of 13 digits, or 10 digits that the tool converts, and it checks the check digit, builds the 95-module EAN-13 pattern and draws it as a vector graphic. The first digit chooses the pattern of the left half, the left and right halves use different digit codes and the guard bars frame the whole barcode.

If you want a price add-on, you choose a currency and enter a price. The add-on is a five-digit code, whose first digit shows the currency and whose last four show the price in cents, with its own check pattern. A code of 90000 is used to say that there is no price information.

The result is an SVG file, which stays sharp at any size. You can place it in your cover file and print it in black on white. Keep a clear space around it, do not shrink it below about 80 percent of its standard size and always scan a printed proof before you print a run.

  • Optional price add-on for the US, Canada or the UK
  • Vector SVG that scales without blurring
Method

How the isbn barcode generator works out its answer

ISBN to EAN-13

An ISBN-13 is already a valid EAN-13 number. An ISBN-10 is converted by adding 978 to the front, dropping its old check digit and calculating a new one, so that the result is a 13-digit number.

The check digit

The final digit is calculated from the first twelve, by multiplying the digits alternately by 1 and 3, adding them up and taking the amount needed to reach the next multiple of ten. The tool checks that the digit you entered agrees.

Drawing the bars

Each digit is drawn as a pattern of seven modules, and the first digit sets how the next six are encoded. Start, centre and end guard patterns are added, as the EAN-13 standard requires, and the digits are printed beneath the bars.

The price add-on

The optional five-digit supplement carries a price code, where the first digit stands for the currency and the remaining four for the amount, so that 51499 means 14.99 in US dollars. The add-on is optional, and many books use none.

Worked examples

ISBN Barcode Generator: worked examples

A thirteen-digit ISBN

The tool checks the digits and draws the bars with the number beneath. You download the SVG and place it in the cover template. The figures are illustrations, and your own text or settings will give different numbers in the isbn barcode generator.

A ten-digit ISBN

The tool converts it to the thirteen-digit form first, shows the new number and then draws the barcode. It saves you doing the conversion by hand.

An ISBN with a price add-on

A five-digit code for a US price is drawn beside the main barcode. The preview shows both so you can check the layout. The figures are illustrations, and your own text or settings will give different numbers in the isbn barcode generator.

Key terms

Key terms to know when you use the isbn barcode generator

ISBN

An identifier for a specific edition of a book. It is a ten- or thirteen-digit number used by retailers, libraries and printers.

EAN-13

The thirteen-digit barcode format used for books. An ISBN-13 is encoded as an EAN-13 barcode.

Check digit

The last digit of an ISBN, calculated from the others. It lets software catch most typing mistakes.

Add-on

A five-digit code printed beside the main barcode to show a price. It is optional and market-specific.

Quiet zone

The clear space around a barcode that scanners need to read it. Artwork must stay out of it.

SVG

A vector image format that stays sharp at any size and is accepted by most design tools.

Use cases

Where authors use the isbn barcode generator

Making a barcode for a back cover

Create a correct EAN-13 for the ISBN of the edition you are publishing. It gives you a vector file that you can pass to your cover designer or place yourself.

Adding a price code

Add the five-digit price add-on where the market expects one, such as US bookstores. The tool draws it beside the main code in the correct position.

Checking an ISBN for mistakes

Typing a wrong digit shows an error, so the tool doubles as a quick validator. It helps you catch a slip before it is printed on thousands of covers.

Common mistakes

Mistakes the isbn barcode generator helps you avoid

Using the wrong ISBN

Each edition, such as paperback, hardcover and ebook, needs its own ISBN. A barcode with the wrong number lists the book under the wrong record.

Shrinking the barcode too far

A barcode that is too small will not scan, and one that is stretched can fail too. Keep to the recommended size, usually about 2 by 1.2 inches.

Covering the quiet zone

Artwork, text or a busy background near the code can stop scanners reading it. Keep the area around the barcode white and clear. The isbn barcode generator will not catch this for you, so keep it in mind when you read the result.

Tips

Getting the most from the isbn barcode generator

01

Use the vector file

A vector barcode stays sharp however it is scaled, which avoids the blur that a small raster image gives. The isbn barcode generator is free and instant, so it is worth running again whenever your book changes.

02

Keep the white box

Place the barcode on a plain white rectangle, so that scanners can read it against any cover. Make the isbn barcode generator a routine step on every project, so that results stay consistent from book to book.

03

Confirm the price code

Check your retailer's rules before adding a price add-on, since some channels ignore it or require a different format. A few minutes with the isbn barcode generator now saves time across the whole manuscript.

Limits

How far to trust the isbn barcode generator

Not an ISBN seller

The tool makes barcodes and does not issue ISBNs. Buy ISBNs from your national agency or use the one your platform provides.

Platforms may add their own

KDP can add a barcode for you if you leave space for it. Check your platform's rules before you place your own.

A scan test is still needed

The tool draws a correct barcode, but printing and placement can still cause problems. Always test a printed proof. For your barcode and back cover, it runs in your browser with the figures you enter, so its answers are only as accurate as those figures.

FAQ

ISBN Barcode Generator: questions answered

These are the questions authors ask most about the isbn barcode generator, including accuracy, privacy and what to do next. If your question about the barcode and back cover is missing, request a quote and a specialist will reply.

What is an ISBN barcode generator?

It is a tool that turns an ISBN into the EAN-13 barcode that is printed on the back of a book, so that retailers and libraries can scan it.

Is an ISBN barcode the same as an EAN-13?

Yes. An ISBN-13 starts with 978 or 979 and is a valid EAN-13 number, and the barcode on a book is an EAN-13 drawn from the ISBN.

Do I need a barcode for my book?

For a printed book sold through shops and libraries, yes. Some platforms add one for you, and ebooks do not need a barcode.

Do I have to buy a barcode?

You do not buy a barcode separately. You get an ISBN from your ISBN agency or a platform, and the barcode is drawn from that number.

What is the price add-on on a book barcode?

It is an optional five-digit supplemental barcode that carries a price code. Many books do not use it.

Can I enter an ISBN-10?

Yes. The tool converts it to an ISBN-13 and draws the barcode for the new number.

What does the check digit do?

It is the last digit, calculated from the first twelve, and it lets a scanner or a person detect a typing error.

What file does the tool give me?

An SVG, which is a vector file that stays sharp at any size and works in most cover design programs.

Where should the barcode go on the cover?

Usually in the lower part of the back cover, away from the spine and the edge, on a white background with a quiet zone around it.

How big should a book barcode be?

Printers usually ask for a size close to the standard, and you should not shrink it far below it. Check the template from your printer.

Does KDP add a barcode?

KDP can add a barcode for you, or you can supply your own, and its cover templates show the place for it. Check its current guidelines.

Is the isbn barcode generator free?

Yes, the barcode generator costs nothing, needs no account and puts no limit on the barcodes you create.

Is this barcode really print-ready?

Yes. The SVG is vector artwork with correct module widths, extended guard bars and quiet zones, so it scales without any loss of sharpness. Place it at 100% size where you can, never scale it below 80%, and always keep it black on a white panel.
