How Word Count Turns Into Page Count
Every page count estimate comes down to one figure: words per page. Work that out and the rest is division. Words per page is set by how much text area is left after margins, how big the type is, and how much space sits between the lines — which is why the same 80,000-word novel can print at wildly different lengths.
This tool starts from a well-established reference point: a 6 by 9 inch trade paperback set in 11 pt type on single spacing with standard margins runs at roughly 300 words per page. From there it scales that figure by the area of your text block, by the square of your type size, by your line spacing, and by whether your margins are tight or generous.
Treat the result as a planning figure rather than a final number. Chapter openers that start on a fresh recto, part titles, blank versos, images, tables, a contents page and front matter all add pages that no word-count formula can see. In practice a real typeset book usually lands within five to ten per cent of the estimate.
Trim size moves the needle most
Going from 5 by 8 to 6 by 9 adds nearly an inch of text width and more than an inch of depth. That is roughly 45 per cent more words on every page, which can cut a 390-page book down to around 270.
Type size compounds
Type size affects both how many characters fit on a line and how many lines fit on a page, so its effect is squared. Moving from 11 pt to 12 pt loses about 16 per cent of your words per page across the whole book.
Books print in even pages
Sheets are printed on both sides, so an interior file always has an even page count. If your text ends on an odd page a blank verso is added, which is why the tool shows the rounded-up even figure alongside the raw estimate.
Front and back matter are extra
A half title, title page, copyright page, dedication, contents, acknowledgements and author bio easily add 10 to 16 pages. Add those on top of the estimate before you order a proof or commission a cover.

Page Count Questions, Answered
How many pages is 80,000 words?
At a standard 6 by 9 inch trim in 11 pt type on single spacing, roughly 267 pages of body text, which rounds up to 268 once the blank verso is added. On a 5 by 8 trim the same manuscript runs to about 390 pages. Trim size, not word count alone, decides the answer.
How accurate is this estimate?
For straight running prose with no images it is usually within five to ten per cent of the finished book. Accuracy drops for anything with a lot of structure — recipe books, workbooks, poetry, heavily illustrated titles — because layout rather than word flow controls those pages.
Why does my Word document page count differ so much?
A Word manuscript is typically 8.5 by 11 inches in 12 pt double spacing, which is around 250 words per page. A typeset 6 by 9 book at 11 pt single spacing is closer to 300, on a much smaller page. The document was never designed to predict printed extent.
Do chapter breaks add pages?
Yes, and more than most authors expect. If every chapter opens on a right-hand page with a drop of white space above the title, a 30-chapter book can pick up 20 to 30 pages of partial and blank pages compared with a continuous text flow.
Why must the page count be even?
Each sheet of paper carries two pages, so the interior file has to be an even number. If your content ends on an odd page the printer adds a blank at the end. Amazon KDP and IngramSpark both reject odd-numbered interior files.
Does page count affect my printing cost and royalty?
Directly. On KDP, paperbacks over about 108 pages are charged a fixed amount plus a per-page rate, so every extra page reduces your royalty on every copy sold. A tighter typeset that saves 20 pages saves real money for the life of the book.
What page count do I need for a printable spine?
Around 100 to 130 pages before there is enough spine width to carry a legible title. Below that most printers advise a blank spine, because normal binding variation will drag the text onto the front or back cover.
Can I hit a target page count deliberately?
Yes. Typesetters routinely adjust type size, leading, margins and chapter-opening depth to land on a specific extent — to reach a printable spine, to stay under a printing cost threshold, or to match the rest of a series. It is a normal part of professional book design.
